The changes are consequential for curriculum planning and student recognition: the district will add a 5-credit standalone personal-finance requirement to comply with state law, separate visual and performing arts from world-language credit requirements, raise the total graduation-credit minimum from 225 to 230, remove class rank from student transcripts beginning with the class of 2027, and adopt Latin honors in place of valedictorian/salutatorian recognition.
Deputy superintendent of educational services presented the proposal for updated graduation requirements, explaining that the new personal-finance course (cited as compliance with AB 2927 in the staff materials) will be required for the class of 2031. Staff recommended the district split the current combined 10-credit visual/performing-arts and world-language requirement into 10 credits each, and increase total credits to 230.
School staff also presented a recommendation to remove class ranking from transcripts. After receiving mixed principal input on implementation timing, the board voted to adopt removal of class ranking beginning with the class of 2027.
On graduation ceremonies and honors, the board approved replacing the valedictorian and salutatorian model with a Latin-honors system (summa/magna/cum laude) beginning with the class of 2027. In discussion the board debated whether to tie Latin honors to Smarter Balanced assessment outcomes and ultimately approved a motion to eliminate the Smarter Balanced participation/score requirement from the honors calculation. Under the motion adopted at the meeting, Latin honors are determined by GPA thresholds only (board-discussion language recorded specifying GPA thresholds for summa, magna and cum laude).
Board members said they support measures that both align to a–g and college-readiness goals and reduce the stress and equity problems associated with a single-valedictorian model. The board approved the recommended graduation-requirements revisions and the policy changes to remove class ranking and to adopt the Latin-honors framework.
