Mayor Stephen B. Wilder on May 13 presented a proclamation recognizing the 10th anniversary of the 7-20 Market and honoring owners David and Lynn Shimko for their community-building work.
The proclamation said the market began in May 2016 and has drawn vendors and visitors from across the region, including Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Youngstown, as well as parts of western Pennsylvania and eastern Michigan. It said the market supports small businesses that have grown into full-time wholesale and retail operations and that several vendors eventually opened brick-and-mortar shops in North Canton.
The proclamation included attendance and economic-impact figures. It said, “The average attendance is 5 to 6,000 people per 7-20 market” and that “35% of the attendees are visiting from outside of Stark County,” adding that those figures translate to “over 1,900,000.0 visitor dollars spent per year based on the day trip calculations” referenced in the proclamation. The language attributes those statistics to reporting cited in the proclamation; the mayor’s office said the proclamation would be posted on the city’s website and social platforms.
Market founders David and Lynn Shimko were invited to the podium and encouraged people to attend the market’s season launch on May 17. Mayor Wilder presented the proclamation and congratulated the Shimkos for the market’s regional reach and its partnerships with nonprofit groups and local events.
Ending
The proclamation was ceremonial; no council action was required. City officials encouraged residents to attend the market season opener and said the proclamation text will be posted on the city’s online platforms.
