Aqua begins pot-pulling in Struthers to identify lead service lines; replacements to be scheduled

During the mayor's report at a Struthers City Council meeting, officials described work by Aqua (the water utility) to identify and schedule replacement of lead or qualifying galvanized customer service lines.
The mayor said Aqua has begun a program of "pot pulling" with a vacuum excavation machine to determine the material of service lines on both the company-owned and customer-owned sides where the pipe material is unknown. The mayor said, "No in service disruptions are expected during this work, and property disruption will be minimal." She added that most disturbed lawn area will be restored immediately and that Aqua will contact customers when their service line is scheduled for replacement.
Streets where construction dates of homes indicate higher probability of lead service lines will be the focus. The mayor said Aqua has already identified several homes on Wilson (street) with lead and that Aqua will fund eligible replacements rather than requiring residents to pay.
Why it matters: identifying and replacing lead service lines reduces a known source of household lead exposure and removes a potential safety and public-health risk for affected residents.
No vote or action was required; the report was informational and staff said customers will receive direct notice before replacement work is scheduled.
