Baberton City Council adopted ceremonial resolutions May 12 honoring Chief Steven Iona for 36 years of service and Lieutenant David Semiman for 33 years with the Baberton Fire Department.
The resolutions—presented from the council dais—outlined each firefighter’s certifications, years of service and notable rescues and recognized their contributions to training, public education and special teams. The council declared each resolution an emergency measure so the commendations would take immediate effect.
Chief Iona, promoted through the ranks to chief in July 2022, was cited for paramedic service dating to 1982, decades of fire investigation work and leadership roles including EMS coordinator and fire marshal. Lieutenant Semiman was recognized for certifications including paramedic and fire‑officer credentials, participation in the Summit County technical rescue team and 33 years of service that included multiple rescue recognitions.
Chief Palacek, who spoke at the meeting, called both honorees mentors and recounted joint service histories. Mayor and councilmembers offered thanks and best wishes; Chief Iona noted his appreciation for administrative support and for the opportunity to serve.
The council recessed for brief photo opportunities; both honorees were awarded copies of the formal commendations.
