Advisory committee formed to study school drop-off and safety; members plan summer work to meet October target

The Newfields School District Board received an update May 7 on the newly formed School Safety Project Advisory Committee and discussed timelines for producing recommendations ahead of budget planning.
A committee organizer (staff) said the advisory committee met and selected a chair, vice chair and secretary, and it scheduled follow-up meetings with an hour set aside for its next session on the 21st. Committee members agreed to conduct in-person observations of student drop-off and pick-up to better understand traffic flow and parent behavior. The organizer described the initial meeting as organizational and informational rather than planning-heavy.
Board members emphasized the project’s compressed timetable. One board member warned that the advisory committee must produce something usable by October to support municipal and budget planning; that will require additional meetings or in-between-meeting work. Several board members suggested the committee may need to meet in the summer or use email and subgroup work between meetings to gather surveys, lot plans and quotes so a tangible product is available by the fall. The board asked legal counsel Alan to clarify what activity is permissible outside formally posted committee meetings so the advisory group can do background work without violating open-meeting rules.
Principal Susie reported the district already has low-cost safety measures it can deploy immediately, such as concentrating staff to monitor student/parent flow after large performances and repainting crosswalks and parking demarcations once weather allows. Board members asked that committee updates be posted to the district website and that committee members share interim work with the board before the June meeting.
Ending: The advisory committee will meet again before the June board meeting and will provide an update at the June meeting; the board asked staff to clarify legal parameters for committee work done between meetings.
