The Soka board advisory committee of Frederick County Public Schools praised a recently held community forum and said it will distribute the committee's proposed standard operating procedure (SOP) and proposed bylaws by email after the May 14 meeting failed to reach quorum.
"We will be tabling our proposed bylaws of events and the election of officers," the meeting chair said, noting the committee could not take votes without a quorum and that Monique (the presenter) was not present. The chair said the documents would be emailed to committee members for review and feedback.
Committee members described the community forum as a successful, interactive event — several speakers praised the student panel and community-agency participation. One member said partners at the forum "were extremely happy to be a part and to connect with our community" and suggested renaming the event a "community fair" for future editions.
With business left incomplete, the committee agreed to schedule a virtual meeting so it can conduct the required votes on minutes, bylaws and election of officers. The chair said she hopes to hold and record that meeting before May 30 and will send a Google form with proposed dates to secure quorum.
The committee also noted open membership recruitment for the Racial Equity Committee and said subcommittee assignments and membership reviews need to be completed before June 19. Members asked whether high-school students would be eligible to vote under the proposed bylaws; the transcript indicates students do vote under the plan being considered.
Members thanked staff and volunteers by name for their support at the forum. The chair specifically praised Sabrina Nail for her behind-the-scenes work, called out Dr. Harris for mentorship and recognized Michelle Early as the outgoing board representative and committee president, asking members to begin planning for her replacement.
