Jeff Koos Memorial Scholarship awards three Smyrna students $2,000 each

The Jeff Koos USMC Memorial Scholarship committee announced three scholarship recipients and provided an update to the Smyrna Town Council at the council’s May meeting.
Kelly Goosetree, who chairs the scholarship committee, told the council 21 students applied this year and that the committee selected three recipients to receive the $6,000 total in awards — $2,000 per student — to honor Jeff Koos’s memory. Goosetree said two of the recipients were surprised with awards at their schools because they were graduating the same day as the council meeting.
Goosetree identified the recipients and their college plans: Dawson Binder (Stewarts Creek High School) will attend UT Martin and is pursuing actuarial science; Briley Walker (Stewarts Creek) will attend Lipscomb University as a theater education major; and Evers Frank (Central High School) will attend Union University to study mechanical engineering. Goosetree said Evers told the committee he applied to avoid graduating with student debt.
Goosetree also reported on last year’s recipients and their progress: Emma Gray (UT Knoxville, civil engineering) will intern this summer with the Town of Smyrna on a geographic information systems project; Sherilyn Morales Navor (MTSU) is studying engineering/mechatronics and has completed dual‑enrollment credits; and Carlos Leon (Lincoln Tech) is in auto‑mechanics and is slated to graduate with multiple certifications.
Goosetree said the committee provides each awardee with a backpack and that the Blue Angels (through Landy and the Blue Angels’ supporters) provided friend/family airshow passes this year to each current and last‑year recipient. Committee members Janet Kush and Landy (Blue Angels) attended the council meeting and thanked the community for support. The committee asked residents to consider registering for the Top Gun Night Run in September, an event that helps fund the memorial and scholarship.
