The Smyrna Town Council adopted the town’s fiscal year 2025–26 budget and set the property tax rate at 52.57 cents per $100 of assessed value, keeping the rate unchanged from the prior year.
Rex, finance staff, told the council the budget and tax ordinance had been posted on the town website and outlined adjustments made since the council retreat. The budget passed after a motion and second; the clerk recorded no opposition during the vote. The tax‑rate ordinance likewise passed on a motion to adopt; councilmembers and staff noted that Smyrna’s tax rate remains one of the lowest among comparable municipalities in Rutherford County and that the town holds a strong credit rating.
Council members and staff said steady sales‑tax growth, targeted capital planning and staff vacancies that create short‑term savings helped sustain the current rate. Rex noted that the town’s AAA credit rating and careful management contributed to maintaining a stable rate, and that periodic year‑end transfers to the capital fund and controlled timing of capital projects create budgetary flexibility.
The council also approved routine year‑end amendments for fiscal 2024–25 that transfer surplus to the capital project fund and cover previously anticipated capital and equipment purchases, including park projects and water‑system equipment. The amendments were presented as housekeeping measures to close the fiscal year and move funds into planned capital work.
Councilmembers praised department staff for financial stewardship and expressed confidence that the budget supports ongoing services while keeping the tax burden steady for residents.
