Commission reviews Prince Avenue–Jefferson Highway corridor project concepts

Capital Projects staff briefed the commission on conceptual upgrades for the Prince Avenue–Jefferson Highway corridor and said the project is being coordinated with the Georgia Department of Transportation and local funding.
Staff described a prioritized list of “must have,” “highly wanted” and “nice to have” project concepts and said the initial focus will be the must-have items because the current conceptual budget will cover only a portion of the total needs. “So this would be the project concept approval. And then we would work down those,” a Capital Projects presenter said.
Commissioners raised safety and traffic concerns, asking whether the concept documents addressed past crash locations and future traffic from proposed subdivisions. A commissioner asked about medians for crash reduction and about signal upgrades at five intersections; staff replied that GDOT has an existing project with a PI number and five signal upgrades are included in their materials.
Staff said user groups meet monthly, generally the fourth Wednesday, to review plans and community input. Commissioners asked staff to share recent traffic studies affecting the corridor; staff agreed to distribute the studies to commissioners and to the user group for review.
No formal vote was taken. Staff said if the commission approves the project concepts at the next agenda setting, the county will direct consultants to produce preliminary engineering and cost estimates and begin the work to move selected concepts into preliminary plan phases.
