Anacortes council renews depot lease for farmers market, updates lease area

Councilmember Walters moved and Councilmember McDougal seconded a motion to authorize a depot building lease renewal for the Anacortes Farmers Market. The council approved the motion unanimously.
City staff told the council the renewal updates a 2020 lease and revises exhibits because the market's use area will expand with the Maritime Plaza extension around the depot. "We have had a lease with the farmers market that was signed in 2020, and then it was not renewed," a city staff presenter said while explaining why the renewal was before the council. The staff presenter noted an exhibit in the packet incorrectly labeled an "easement area" and said a corrected exhibit will show the "lease area."
Councilmembers commended the market's role in the community and discussed interest in better connecting the market area to the nearby downtown retail corridor. Councilmember McDougal asked whether staff had information on the market's annual economic impact; staff said that data had been included in a prior grant presentation and that it could be forwarded to council members.
The motion passed with a recorded vote in favor by Councilmember Walters, Cleo McGrath, Councilmember Moulton, Councilmember McDougal, Huebick, Councilmember Fantini and Councilmember Young. Staff said the lease will be updated with the corrected Exhibit B and that the city and market will finalize use details as the Maritime Plaza area develops.
