Parks update: AMVET shelter, new tennis courts, stage training and rec center design timeline

City parks staff reported progress on multiple facilities projects: an AMVET shade shelter approved at a prior commission meeting should be installed soon; new tennis courts have winning bidders and are expected to be online by late summer; the Erie County Community Foundation–donated portable stage requires inspection and staff training; and the recreation center remains in criteria design with a planned update to City Commission in June.
Parks staff said bidders Purdue and Erie Blacktop were the winning contractors for the new tennis courts, which will be located at the American Crand site and used by both school districts. Staff said additional grant funding may still be applied to offset some construction costs and that the timeline targets July or August for court availability.
The AMVET shelter is a shade structure with seating for a park’s Phase 2 work; staff said the shelter was approved by the commission at the previous meeting and will appear in the park phase schedule. Staff also said they will conduct inspections and certify additional staff to operate the Erie County Community Foundation–donated stage (originally donated in 2018); training and inspection were scheduled to occur at the end of the month.
Staff discussed stage placement logistics for upcoming events, noting that placing a stage at the pier’s end affects public access and setup windows; organizers said the Beats by the Bay event will use the pier-end placement if forecasts are favorable but might move to a more compact pavilion location in the event of rain.
On the recreation center, staff said the project remains in the criteria design phase and that staff hope to present an update to City Commission by June; staff also announced a pool open house on May 27 from 5 to 7 p.m., when officials expect to provide a June schedule.
Next steps: staff will proceed with contractor coordination for tennis courts, schedule stage inspections and staff training, and provide a rec center update to City Commission as the design process advances.
