Somers Point Recreation Commission elects 2025 officers; rec director says City Council moved ordinance to eliminate position

The Somers Point Recreation Commission elected its 2025 officers during a reorganization at City Hall and heard from Recreation Director Doug that the City Council introduced an ordinance to eliminate the recreation director position, with a second reading scheduled “next week, the 20 third,” Doug said.

Commissioner Stewart was nominated and confirmed by a straw poll as chair for 2025. Commissioners chose Matt Indigo as vice chair and Commissioner Shields as secretary by the same process; all nominations were seconded and approved by voice votes during the meeting.

The reorganization took place after the meeting was called to order and a roll call of commissioners. The commission approved minutes from its prior meeting before moving on to officer nominations. Doug told the commission that the City Council “did put an ordinance out to do away with the rec director position at their last city council meeting” and that the ordinance’s second reading was set for “next week, the 20 third, at their next meeting,” he said.

Commissioners did not take a formal vote on the Council action; Doug’s report was informational. The commission did not adopt a position on the ordinance at the meeting.

The commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 6, when commissioners said they will continue routine business and public requests.

Ending: The reorganization completed the commission’s officer appointments for 2025 and placed the recreation director’s position change on the Council’s calendar; the commission will consider further responses if and when City Council action produces a formal outcome or a staff request for direction.
