Pickleball players ask Monroe Township to expand indoor courts and advisory-board representation

A group of Monroe Township residents asked the council on Jan. 6 to expand indoor pickleball access at the township recreation center and to be represented on the Recreation Advisory Board.
Karen Chen described weekday daytime shortages: the rec center has two gyms marked for three pickleball courts each, but only three courts are currently set in one gym and a single court in the other. Chen asked the council to open the unused two-thirds of the second gym to pickleball from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. and from noon to 1 p.m., saying the town already owns sufficient portable nets and the request would cost the township nothing.
Jennifer Hijack, a fellow player, said she had emailed council members and that informal requests through rec staff had not resolved the scheduling. Both speakers asked how to proceed and sought clearer rec-center policies. Mayor and staff responded that the township is aware of demand for more courts, that the design of new outdoor pickleball courts is underway and that staff are working on short-term scheduling remedies. Staff said outdoor courts are intended for town residents and that a reservation or access system will be developed.
Ending: Officials asked the players to stay after the meeting to provide contact information and to meet with recreation staff and the project manager; township staff said outdoor courts are in design and the town will consider budget timing for construction this year.
