School committee reports superintendent met most goals, exceeded budget and facilities expectations

Committee members rated most goals as “met.” Reviewers rated the budget and facilities communications and planning goal as “exceeded.”
The subcommittee’s written summary, read at the meeting, said Dr. Cohen’s “comprehensive district protocol manual,” policy updates, cybersecurity work and legal collaboration supported the professional practice rating. For the student learning goal, reviewers noted the district’s deeper learning framework, project-based learning professional development and efforts to integrate AI tools into instruction as evidence the goal was met.
On equity and inclusion, the committee cited rollout of a “What’s in a Name” initiative, inclusive visual materials, use of the equity-pause protocol and disaggregated student-data analysis. Reviewers recommended continued outreach and additional surveys; one reviewer described moving the EDI survey to the following year as a missed opportunity.
The evaluation rated Dr. Cohen particularly highly for budget and capital planning communications, singling out “extensive collaboration with town officials,” a five-year financial projection presentation, infographics, and transparent budget reporting that helped build public support for capital projects. Several reviewers praised Dr. Cohen’s visible community engagement and credited those efforts with positive reception from local finance bodies.
Committee feedback also included constructive notes: some reviewers urged broader delegation to reduce strain on central-office staff; others recommended continuing to refine expectations for staff interaction and escalating issues through the leadership team.
