San Luis Obispo County supervisors were formally sworn in at a special board meeting that included ceremonial oaths and a reorganization of board leadership, culminating in Don Ortiz-Legg assuming the chair and Supervisor Paulding being installed as vice chair.
The ceremony opened with public comments from community organization representatives who congratulated incoming and continuing supervisors and pledged to collaborate with the county. Courtney Kino, director of community relations and economic development at Cal Poly, offered the university’s thanks to outgoing leaders and congratulations to Heather Moreno and John Pashong on their elections. Russ Levinway, executive vice president at REACH, thanked outgoing supervisors and welcomed the newly seated board members. Francisco Ramirez of the Hispanic Business Association expressed similar congratulations and a readiness to partner with the county.
County Clerk-Recorder Elena Kano administered the oath of office, which references the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California. After the oaths, the board conducted its reorganization. Chair Don Ortiz-Legg presided over the remainder of the meeting. A motion to install Supervisor Paulding as vice chair was made, seconded, and adopted by roll call. The roll call recorded affirmative votes from Supervisors Gibson, Moreno, Paulding, Pashong and Ortiz-Legg.
Outgoing Chair Supervisor Arnold used her board comments to thank staff and constituents for the opportunity to serve, reflecting on 12 years on the dais and the honor of representing the county. Newly seated and returning supervisors also spoke briefly: Supervisor Paulding said, "I just wanna say thank you for the honor of being vice chair," and Supervisor Gibson urged strategic collaboration to address county challenges.
The board noted its next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14, and closed with an invitation to a post-meeting reception. The session was primarily ceremonial; no new policy items or ordinances were introduced or decided beyond the leadership appointments.
