Supervisors proclaim May Affordable Housing Month, urge continued regional collaboration

The Board of Supervisors proclaimed May 2025 as Affordable Housing Month for San Luis Obispo County and received a presentation from Linda Belch, Deputy Director of Adult and Homeless Services, on housing-cost burdens and local initiatives.
Belch said 65% of low- and very-low-income households and 37% of all county households are cost-burdened, defined as paying more than 30% of gross income for housing. She noted that the county supported the creation of over 1,300 housing units in the last decade and highlighted collaborative efforts on the regional housing compact and the housing and infrastructure regional framework.
Board members praised nonprofit and local-government partners — including housing authorities and trust funds — and discussed ongoing opportunities to identify county land, school-district parcels and other sites for housing development. No fiscal actions were taken at this hearing; staff will continue outreach and highlight local stories during Affordable Housing Month.
