EDC moves business appreciation event to fall, opts for second-week timing

The Franklin City Economic Development Commission voted Thursday to move its annual business appreciation celebration from the winter/spring window back to the fall, with the commission indicating a preference for a second-week date to avoid conflicts with the council and plan-commission calendar and election-season publicity restrictions.

Commission members said the change aims to avoid election “blackout” windows that limit including elected officials or candidate photos and quotes in city communications. Commissioners discussed multiple timing options — spring (March/April), late fall (October/November) and a November date in the second week — and settled on fall timing to keep the mayor and council available and to fit city publicity deadlines. The commission also discussed venue capacity, speaker selection and award nominations; members asked to return with names for potential speakers and nominees at a future meeting.

Practical issues raised included aligning the event with the city’s newsletter deadlines, avoiding plan-commission meeting nights so council members can attend, and ensuring the event does not conflict with larger community events such as Packers game nights or holiday weeks. The group also discussed whether the celebration should include a substantive business speaker or more of an entertainer; members asked staff to gather options and cost estimates for a future agenda.

The commission approved the scheduling change by voice vote. Staff will return with possible dates in the October–November window, venue availability and suggested speaker/award nominee lists.
