Sheriff's office secures state grant authorization, recurring agreements and Portola policing contract

Plumas County supervisors approved several sheriff’s office items Feb. 11, including a resolution authorizing the department to apply for and administer California Department of Parks and Recreation off‑highway vehicle funds, and a one-year agreement that pays local agencies for vault space used by radio and communications equipment.
Sheriff Todd Johns told the board the OHV grant application is a routine annual requirement; he also explained the vault agreements support radio infrastructure on mountain sites. County counsel noted the CHP vault agreements contained indemnity language counsel could not fully approve, but staff described ongoing negotiations and recommended moving forward so services remain uninterrupted.
The board also ratified a law-enforcement services agreement with the City of Portola (incoming revenue approximately $130,000 for FY 2024–25) and authorized recruitment to fill a funded sheriff sergeant FTE. Supervisors approved the sheriff’s requests by roll call and voice votes. The sheriff’s office said the Portola contract and the recurring agreements preserve patrol and response capabilities for the city and county residents alike.
