Board approves more flexible DEU timing so teachers can earn supplemental pay earlier

The Wisconsin Rapids Board of Education approved revisions to the supplemental pay plan related to District Educational Units (DEUs) that give teachers more flexibility on when DEU coursework can begin and how hours can be counted toward current or future years.
Under the change, teachers may start DEU coursework on the day after their last record-keeping day (for example, if record-keeping ends June 5, a teacher may start DEU work on June 6). If all required work for a DEU is completed by a designated date in June (presenters cited June 25 as an example), teachers can elect to have those hours count either for the current school year or the following year. Staff said the change addresses concerns that teachers who complete professional-development work immediately following the school year previously could not count those hours because their DEU allotment was already full.
The district’s Quality Educator Committee (QEC) unanimously supported the change. The board voted to approve the modified language to the supplemental pay plan so teachers may begin DEUs immediately after their last record-keeping day and choose the year in which to apply qualifying June DEU hours.
