Ashland County snowmobile alliance reorganizes; trail reroutes, bridge relocations and groomer storage discussed

Representatives of the Ashland County snowmobile and ATV community told the Forestry and Recreation Committee that the Ashland County Alliance recently elected new officers, rewrote bylaws and reorganized committees to increase participation and to focus on trails, signage and landowner easements.
Alliance leaders said they acquired an acre of land on Hillcrest Road donated by a landowner to use for groomer storage and other operations; they plan to ask the county clerk about locating the storage there while they develop a longer-term groomer facility. The group reported challenges with several landowner denials for trail crossings that require reroutes and a bridge relocation, and said it is coordinating highway crossing approaches with the Department of Transportation ahead of planned highway work.
Alliance representatives also said clubs shared grooming equipment this past winter and that clubs are pursuing grants and Forest Service coordination for trail grading and fill at problem spots. One representative estimated the broader region lost significant winter tourism revenue during seasons with little snow and said local grooming supports the tourism economy.
