Garfield County to advertise sale of fully upfitted patrol units to law enforcement agencies

Garfield County commissioners voted April 14 to authorize county staff to advertise and offer fully upfitted, used patrol and civil vehicles for sale to other law enforcement agencies, rather than spending extensive motor-pool labor to decommission equipment before auction.
County staff told commissioners decommissioning an individual vehicle typically takes a motor-pool technician 60 to 80 hours, and that seven fully upfitted 2024 rollouts were awaiting decommissioning. Selling vehicles as-is to other agencies, while removing radios and other critical equipment, would reduce county labor costs and speed transfers to agencies that need ready-to-use units.
Commissioners discussed pricing approaches (Blue Book value plus an upfitting premium was suggested), potential outreach beyond Colorado, and the need to restrict sales to law enforcement agencies because some lighting and upfit packages were being retained for law-enforcement-only buyers. The board approved a motion to advertise the vehicles for sale through CBI channels and to report back at year-end on results.
County staff said routine public auctions previously yielded $8,000 to $12,000 for comparable vehicles, but that fully upfitted units may command different pricing and that exact resale amounts will depend on market demand.
