Garfield County commissioners ask U.S. interior secretary to keynote 2026 Jolt Energy Summit

Garfield County commissioners on Monday approved a resolution asking U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum to deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Jolt Energy Summit in Grand Junction.
Commissioner Sampson introduced the idea to bring federal attention to Western Colorado energy issues and to seek a site visit; he told the board, “I would very much like for us to, sign that resolution and send it to Secretary Burgum.”
The board debated whether a formal resolution or a letter would be the more appropriate vehicle and whether other counties and regional organizations would submit similar requests. Commissioners noted that Jolt is supported by multiple Western Colorado counties and by the AGNC (All of Garfield, Mesa, Delta and other counties) and that many counties typically send resolutions as a show of unified support. The board agreed it would ask the Jolt organizing committee or AGNC to assemble county resolutions and a cover letter for delivery.
After a public-comment check, the board voted to approve the resolution and authorized the chair to sign. The vote was recorded as Aye by all members present.
The resolution asks the secretary to keynote the August 2026 event to showcase energy development in Western Colorado; it does not commit Garfield County to additional funding or obligations beyond the request and signature.
The board did not receive a formal acceptance or reply from the Department of the Interior at the meeting; staff said the counties and AGNC would coordinate delivery of the packet to ensure the request reaches the secretary’s office.
The action follows prior county work to recruit federal engagement on energy and was framed by commissioners as an effort to draw national attention to local energy development and policy issues.
