Garfield County public trustee reports smaller deficit, reserves remain at $292,000

Gary Cooley, Garfield County treasurer, presented the public trustee office's first-quarter financial report at the April 14 Board of County Commissioners meeting and told commissioners the deficit has narrowed from last year.
Cooley said net revenue for the public trustee side is a negative $5,698.16 for the quarter but that the department has reserve funds of $292,000, which he said can sustain operations for nearly 13 years at current levels. He said the department has implemented efficiency measures and continues to aim to break even or post a surplus.
Commissioners asked about foreclosure activity; Cooley said there has been a recent uptick in foreclosures, but that it was not yet alarming. After questions, a commissioner moved to accept the public trustee's first-quarter report as presented; another commissioner seconded the motion and the board voted to accept the report.
The board recorded no budget supplements at this time and directed staff to continue pursuing efficiencies in the public trustee office.
