Board approves revised Iturbide monument sign: digital cabinet removed, lighting and finish upgrades added

The Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 1 board voted May 13 to approve technical changes to the Iturbide exterior monument sign and to amend the contract with SCC Signs and Lighting to reflect those changes.
The change matters because the sign is a visible landmark on Iturbide Street; the board’s action finalized a mix of design trade-offs meant to preserve visual features while cutting a costly digital cabinet from the contract.
City staff described the modifications: removing an LED messaging cabinet that had an estimated installed cost near $22,000; adding a second cabinet to face the rear (estimated about $2,300), adding LED lighting bands on the vertical beam and upgraded light modules for the ornamental top feature (roughly $4,232 reported as an item), and adding a $5,000 contingency for a self-consolidating concrete mix design to achieve a fine finish on the cast concrete vertical element. Staff said removing the digital cabinet created net savings and allowed the other upgrades to fit under the original budgeted amount.
A motion to approve the modifications “with the deletion of the electrical cabinet and the additions listed” passed by voice vote. The motion to approve the modifications as presented and to the revised price of $106,008.66 was moved by board member Juan Caballero and seconded by board member Jesus Esparza. The meeting record shows a voice vote of “aye” and the chair declared the motion passed; no recorded roll-call of individual yes/no votes was entered into the minutes.
Staff noted the vendor had not yet received a notice to proceed; the board asked staff to return final contract numbers if they change and to document the approved technical changes for the vendor.
