The Coppell City Council designated the week of May 2025 as Emergency Medical Services Week and recognized the work of firefighters who provide emergency medical services for the city.
At the presentation, Fire Chief Kevin Richardson said the Coppell Fire Department houses EMS and that all firefighters are dual-trained as paramedics; Richardson said the department runs three full-time ambulances and responded to over 4,000 emergency calls in the previous year. He thanked elected officials and staff for providing resources and staffing and noted Fire Station 5 is due to open in a few months, though he did not provide a firm opening date.
Division Chief Michael McDowell, who oversees the EMS program, described ongoing training and noted instances in which department members received recognition from area hospitals for lifesaving work. McDowell also told the council an anecdote about a child the department aided who later returned to visit and deliver a holiday meal to firefighters.
Council members publicly thanked the department for service. Council Member Carroll said the department often serves residents on some of the worst days of their lives and thanked staff for their care. Council Member Prem Kumar and others also thanked the department for choosing to work in Coppell.
The council's proclamation aligns with the national observance and the mayor read prepared language praising EMS personnel and encouraging community recognition.
