Needham Select Board members heard more than two hours of public comment on May 13 about the Envision Needham Center concept plan, a proposed redesign of Great Plain Avenue intended to improve pedestrian safety, address stormwater resiliency and create new public realm space.
The concept, presented by Apex consultants Margot Spiller and Cassandra Thomason and landscape architect Karen Fitzgerald, would narrow the existing four travel lanes to a two‑lane cross section through the core, add protected bicycle lanes, widen sidewalks and create curb extensions and mid‑block crossings. Margot Spiller, the consultant lead, said the design responds to three goals: “improving safety and mobility, encouraging sustainability and climate change resilience, and promoting beautification and place‑making.”
The plan aims to retain roughly 90 on‑street spaces within the project limits, Fitzgerald said, and to upgrade deficient drainage to reduce flooding that occurred in 2023. “We are able to retain 90 spaces, thereabouts in this concept plan,” she said.
