Elyria to accept $19,400 'Shine a Light on Dumpers' grant to deter illegal dumping at quarry

Elyria’s finance committee on May 12 approved acceptance of a $19,400 grant from the Ohio Attorney General’s office under the "Shine a Light on Dumpers" program to help deter illegal dumping and vandalism at a city quarry.
Engineer Schneider said the grant award would be used to install more vandal-resistant fencing where fences at the quarry have been repeatedly cut and to reduce garbage that ends up in the river. Committee members and the safety-service director discussed signage options; the safety-service director said the city can fabricate tall, pole-mounted signs in-house to improve visibility and reduce theft of signage from fences.
The committee accepted the award and requested an emergency clause so the city can proceed promptly; staff will develop a plan for fencing and signage placement in the areas where cuts and dumping have been frequent.
