Student trustees press for expanded peer mediation and AVID recruitment; administration outlines training and outreach steps

Three student trustees gave campus reports April 24 and urged the district to expand peer mediation, bolster AVID enrollment and improve inter-campus connections.
Student trustee Zoey Johnson of Crowley High School told trustees peer mediation can prevent fights and suggested more proactive outreach and awareness so students know the program exists. District student services staff member Mr. Moffett said the district already conducts peer-mediator training (Buck Halton conducted training in October for representatives from high schools and Early College) and that administrators recommend students for the program; trustees and students discussed ways to improve publicity and earlier referrals.
On AVID, staff presented recent enrollment tallies showing total AVID participation across grade levels and campuses and highlighted a decline in incoming ninth-grade tallies at Crowley High School and North Crowley High School. Miss Koonchick said recruitment actions include coordinator outreach into middle schools, a Google sign-up link for parents, and an email sent to all eighth-grade families; trustees and student speakers recommended student ambassadors and peer testimonials as stronger recruitment tools.
Student trustees from North Crowley and Crowley Collegiate Academy reported campus events and noted successful senior scholarship totals at CCA; trustees thanked the students and asked staff to follow up on the peer mediation and AVID recruitment proposals.
Administration said it will continue follow-up with student trustees, monitor AVID tally data and expand outreach to middle schools; no formal board vote was required on the student reports.
