Canyon ISD reports corrective actions after intruder-detection audit, campuses testing districtwide alert system

Canyon ISD staff told trustees April 14 that the district completed an intruder-detection audit that identified a correctable compliance issue during student loading and unloading, and that the district is moving forward with staff training and a near-complete rollout of a new communication system.

"We have corrective actions for that audit, mainly due to loading and unloading by students," Robin (security staff) told the board. Robin described a finding in which a teacher stood too many feet away from an exterior door during a loading event and thus did not meet the audit's proximity standard, though the teacher had visual line of sight to the door. Robin said the district will conduct corrective actions and training to address the shortcoming.

District staff also reported progress installing and testing InformaCast, a mass-notification and emergency-communication platform. "We're getting really close," Robin said. "We're having campuses that are actually testing that out. We have some campuses that are fully equipped at this point and they're actually doing drills with them."

The security presentation noted the district continues to monitor pending legislative changes to school safety requirements and will adjust protocols if new rules are adopted. The update was informational; no board vote was required.
