Deputy Director Michelle Rousen introduced Cynthia (promoted from eligibility specialist/integrated case worker) and Laura (promoted from child welfare social worker) as supervisors in the Eligibility and Employment Services and Child Welfare divisions. Rousen said the Eligibility and Employment Services division serves more than 6,000 residents annually through medical enrollment, CalWORKs and CalFresh.
Immigration legal help and community forum - Francie Avitia, program manager in social services, announced an upcoming "Know Your Rights" presentation by immigration attorney Lazaro Salazar on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Emerald Room at the Mammoth Lakes Village. The event will include a presentation in Spanish and private sidebars for confidential legal questions; staff distributed bilingual flyers and coordinated outreach with churches, restaurants, the Chamber of Commerce and lodging employers to reach Spanish-speaking residents. - Sheriff Ingrid Braun and county staff briefed the board on a Febo Latino (Foro Latino) event the prior Friday: Braun said the forum was held primarily in Spanish with English interpretation, drew a packed room and about 50 Zoom participants, and aimed to reassure residents about local agencies— policies on immigration enforcement. "We do not do that," Braun said, referring to acting as federal immigration enforcement; she described law enforcement, public health and social services staff answering community questions and stressing that local agencies are not federal immigration agents.
