Mono County provided an update on recreation projects, visitor services and trails planning and the Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to reorganize the county’s recreation work into a standalone division with an upgraded superintendent role and a limited-term coordinator position.
Sustainable Recreation Manager Marcela Rose summarized current and upcoming work, including the third "Camp Like a Pro" video (focused on campfire safety), visitor-center revitalization in Bridgeport, seasonal field hires and a planned update to the county trails plan. "We are finishing up hiring our field staff for the season," Rose said, adding the county plans to revive the county-run Bridgeport visitor center as a self-serve hub and explore weekend staffing or volunteer engagement.
Nut graf: The board approved a package of personnel changes to formalize the recreation program and add capacity: reclassifying the recreation manager to a superintendent-level role, creating a limited-term Sustainable Recreation Coordinator position, and renaming the trail steward position to "recreation steward." County staff said the positions will be funded from non-general-fund sources including geothermal royalties, Local Transportation Commission (LTC) grants and Community Service Area (CSA 1) funds; the county will reassess funding annually.
Assistant CAO Christine Bouchard told the board the recreation program’s operating budget is modest and the geothermal fund has accumulated a dedicated balance; the recommended coordinator would be reviewed annually and funded in part by geothermal funds and grants. The staff report estimated the superintendent’s full annual compensation at about $139,000 (salary and benefits) and the coordinator’s full annual cost at about $95,820; staff said the coordinator is intended as a limited-term position with yearly budget review.
Board members and presenters discussed ensuring on-the-ground maintenance capacity, volunteer recruitment and the need to track outcomes and grants. The supervisors approved the restructuring motion and related classifications on a 5-0 vote.
Ending: Staff said the reorganization aims to improve program stability, increase grant-readiness and make it easier to deliver recreation services and stewardship in partnership with federal and local agencies.
