Trustees report on governance, TASB and Texas Black Caucus events; district showcased at regional conferences

Board members used the March 18 meeting’s report period to summarize recent conferences and committee work they attended on behalf of ALIEF ISD.

Multiple trustees reported attending governance training and the TASB governance conference in Galveston. Trustee Anne Williams and others highlighted presentations by district attorneys and governance experts and praised the district team for visible participation and public-facing materials. Trustees said ALIEF ISD’s presentations and exhibit booth drew attention and that district representatives were frequently approached for best-practice information.

Trustees also reported attending the Texas Black Caucus of School Board Members summit, describing it as a multi-day event with panels on governance and law. Trustee Lily Truong said the sessions were informative and “eye-opening,” and Trustee Janet Spurlock and others thanked district staff for supporting delegation travel and materials. Several trustees noted that ALIEF ISD’s branding and staff participation were prominently featured and that the district used the events to showcase programs and recruit partners.

Trustees gave brief reports on internal committee work as well: Trustee Lily Truong reported on an AI committee working on policy language for student and staff use of artificial intelligence tools; Trustee Spurlock said a lead-teacher selection process was near completion; and other trustees described community engagement and outreach events they attended during the reporting period.

Board members thanked district staff for event coordination and for preparing presentations and materials. Several trustees noted that representatives from the district legal team provided valuable guidance for governance and ethics discussions at the conferences.

No formal action was taken; the reports were informational updates to the board.
