ALIEF ISD begins feedback cycle on draft 2026–27 academic calendar, aims to present recommendations in April

ALIEF ISD staff told trustees on March 18 they are developing draft academic calendars for 2026–27 and 2027–28 and will solicit stakeholder feedback before returning with recommended calendars in April.
Kathy Young, deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said the district adopted a two-year calendar cycle in 2024 and intends to maintain that cadence to help families and principals plan in advance. Staff have convened a calendar committee, which will include campus principals, athletics representation and district staff; Trustee Janet Spurlock has served previously on the committee and was expected to participate again.
Young said two draft calendars will be circulated to stakeholder groups, including the district’s EIC parent group, superintendent’s council and other advisory bodies. She noted operational constraints used in drafting — testing calendars, Holiday and daylight-savings effects, and alignment with neighboring districts and Houston Community College for dual-credit students — and said the drafts will identify instructional minutes and days. The administration plans to present recommended calendars for board approval in April so that families and staff can plan ahead.
Trustees asked about spring-break timing and whether the district can align to region calendars to avoid conflicts with neighboring districts and families’ travel plans. Young said the drafts will reflect those tradeoffs and that the district tries to align with area calendars because many staff have children enrolled elsewhere. Trustees also asked about the timing of professional development days and first-day logistics; Young said professional development will be campus-led with district coordination and described the planned update process through board notes and stakeholder feedback channels.
Administration said it will post the drafts for public comment, return a recommended calendar to the board in April and continue the two-year cycle for future planning.
