Board approves language adjustments to strategic-plan goals for student achievement and organizational strength
Summary
Following a presentation and discussion, trustees approved administration’s recommendations to combine student-achievement goal language and to adopt organizational-strength language; trustees also requested further wordsmithing on the ALEY family/community language at a later time.
The ALIEF ISD board voted March 18 to approve administration’s proposed language adjustments to the district strategic plan that combine two student-achievement statements into a single goal and add explicit organizational-strength language.
Deputy Superintendent Sheon introduced Rayyan Amin, chief of school improvement and accountability, who summarized the district’s strategic-plan development process and the five pillars that frame district priorities. Amin recommended combining the two previously separate student-achievement goals into one consolidated statement: “Alief ISD will close the achievement gap to ensure all students reach their academic potential and improve student preparation for college and career.” Amin also presented goal language for Organizational Strength, which emphasizes financial stability, accountability and transparency, leadership development and improved communications.
Trustees asked clarifying questions and provided editorial feedback, particularly on the language under the “Alief family” pillar. Trustee Rick Moreno said the phrase “build positive relationships” felt too vague and urged more direct wording to support recruiting families and promoting school choice; other trustees echoed the request for more intentional language while noting that some breadth is useful for implementation. Amin and administration agreed to collect board input and return with refined wording options for the Alief family pillar; trustees were told that additional wordsmithing could be done later but that the current motion addressed vertical alignment between board goals and the district’s newly adopted strategic-plan pillars.
A motion to approve the proposed adjustments to goal language was made, seconded and recorded by the board. (See the meeting’s Votes at a Glance for the formal motion text and the recorded vote.) Administration said the language alignment will help match future board updates and departmental reporting to the strategic pillars.
Amin said the strategic plan was developed in 2023 through stakeholder interviews, focus groups and a community survey and that annual metrics are mapped to strategies under each pillar. Trustees asked that the administration circulate draft wording and options for the Alief family language for review and potential later action.
No additional changes to other goals were recommended at this time; administration said it would return with any future rewording proposals as needed.
