Katy ISD trustees approve canvass, certify May 3 election; Cross and Redmond declared winners

Katy Independent School District trustees on Monday, May 12, approved the canvass of the May 3 board of trustees election and later certified the results, declaring James Cross the winner for Position 1 and Lance Redmond the winner for Position 2.
Election Administrator Justin Graham summarized the Central Counting Station report and told trustees the district’s 13 precincts returned more than 18,000 votes — about a 10% increase over the previous year — and reviewed vote totals for the two contested positions. Graham also thanked district election staff and early voting board members for their work.
The board first voted to approve the canvass of the May 3 election. A motion to “canvas the results of the 05/03/2025 Katy Independent School District Board of Trustees election as reported by the Central Counting Station Committee and declares the winners of each position as follows: Position 1, James Cross with 10,474 votes; and Position 2, Lance Redmond with 12,598 votes” was moved and seconded and the motion carried 4-0.
Trustees then considered certification of the election. A subsequent motion to “certify the 05/03/2025 Katy Independent School Board of Trustees election for position 1 whereby James Cross was duly elected and position 2 whereby Lance Redmond was duly elected” was moved, seconded and passed 5-0.
Graham noted other results reported in his presentation: Victor Perez received 7,565 votes for Position 1; Tammy Reid received 3,543 votes for Position 2; and write-in candidate Chris Fields received 573 votes. Graham said the district used six early voting locations and 13 election-day locations and that the district partnered with the City of Katy, which held a separate canvass of its concurrent election.
Dr. Regorski confirmed the meeting notice complied with the Texas Open Meetings Act, saying, “I do confirm we're in compliance with the provisions of our Texas Open Meeting Act for our meeting today.” The board adjourned at 3:51 p.m., concluding the canvass and certification process for the May 3 election.
