KATY ISD staff highlight Outdoor Learning Center’s hands‑on curriculum, wide reach for fourth‑grade science

KATY ISD staff provided trustees with an overview of the Kenneth D. Welch Outdoor Learning Center during the May 12 meeting, describing facilities, curriculum alignment and student participation.

Presenters said the center occupies 34.5 acres and offers two classroom pavilions, animal pens, ponds, garden areas and historic features. Staff told the board that the OLC supports district elementary science and social studies standards by hosting station‑based fourth‑grade field trips and by distributing incubator materials for first‑grade chick‑hatching lessons. The presenters said the center coordinated 118 separate fourth‑grade field trips this year and distributed more than 900 fertilized eggs to 46 elementary campuses for the incubator program.

The OLC also runs a summer recreation program for students entering grades 4–6. Presenters said the summer program runs three two‑week sessions and serves 288 students. Staff highlighted partnerships with local volunteer groups and Texas Parks and Wildlife, and noted regular collaboration with Boy Scout troops and FFA for events and contests.

Staff described the facility’s 2017 bond‑funded renovations, which added science/history classrooms, additional animal enclosures, a second pond and improved road access. The presentation was informational; trustees asked clarifying questions about scheduling and how community groups reserve the site for events.
