The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners on April 16 adopted four proclamations recognizing April observances.
The Board proclaimed April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Deschutes County. Representatives from Saving Grace—Stephanie Miller (development director) and Taryn Ammons Ramos—addressed the Board on the organization’s 24/7 helpline and hospital support for survivors.
The Board also proclaimed International Dark Sky Week in Deschutes County, with Kathy Flanagan of Dark Sky Oregon and the International Dark-Sky Association noting the environmental, ecological and astrotourism value of preserving dark skies.
The Board proclaimed April 13–19, 2025, as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week to recognize the county’s 911 telecommunicators. Sarah Cross White, the county’s 911 director, and Chris Perry, 911 operations manager, described the role of telecommunicators and the county’s dispatch operations.
Finally, the Board proclaimed April 2025 as National County Government Month to recognize county services and staff. The proclamations were moved, seconded and approved by the commissioners; votes recorded in the meeting were affirmative for the items as presented. The Board paused for photo opportunities following the proclamations.
The proclamations are ceremonial and do not create new legal duties or funding. The organizations present used the occasion to highlight services and outreach for survivors, dark-sky initiatives, 911 staffing and the role of county government.
