La Porte athletics reports record participation, district championships and stadium return; coaches outline fall schedule

An athletics update presented May 13 to the La Porte ISD board highlighted participation growth, team successes and the return of home competition to the new Bulldog Stadium and Legacy Complex.

The athletics presenter reported that La Porte had approximately 1,189 student athletes across junior high and high school (about 715 at the high school level and 474 at junior high) and estimated 1,359 competitions during the school year. The district won three team district championships across its conferences: undefeated district football champions, Lady Dog basketball district champions, and 25A Bulldog baseball district champions (the baseball team advanced as bi-district champions).

Individual achievements included multiple UIL state qualifiers and top finishes: Ulysses Felice finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles at state; Arissa Rodriguez placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles and will attend Lamar University; other qualifiers and regional placers were noted across cross country, powerlifting and other sports. The presenter said 17 student athletes signed to compete at the collegiate level during spring signing events.

Looking ahead, the athletics office said the new Bulldog Stadium will host varsity and sub-varsity football games, more than 40 home soccer matches, returning district track meets and area competitions. The district plans an initial test event and a spring game on the stadium schedule.

Board members praised coaches and staff for the season’s achievements and for sustaining program success while teams were displaced during construction. No formal action was taken on athletics items at the meeting.
