County staff report on demolition grant, energy grant review and Homeland Security radio award

County staff updated the commission May 6 on several grants and capital projects.
Demolition/land-acquisition grant: staff submitted the first-quarter progress report for the county’s dilapidated-housing demolition grant and included before-and-after photos and invoices for the initial site removal. The county has not yet received reimbursement pending approval of the progress report.
Energy/lighting grant: the county’s application under a state conservation block grant (West Virginia Office of Energy) has been returned to active review after a temporary federal pause. The county must supply an updated estimate for LED lighting work at the courthouse; county staff expects to submit that estimate imminently. The grant cycle could provide up to roughly $30,000 in funding, staff said, which would cover partial fixture and bulb replacement.
Public-safety radio grant: staff reported receiving a $36,174.50 award from the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security Emergency Management Division to buy portable radios for law enforcement deputies. The funding is earmarked to add radios and spares for the sheriff’s office.
Opioid settlement reporting: the county submitted its required compliance report to the West Virginia First Foundation for funds received from opioid settlements.
What’s next: staff will submit the updated LED lighting estimate, pursue reimbursement under the demolition grant once the quarter report is approved and proceed with procurement for approved radios per grant requirements.
