Sheriff reports large fentanyl seizures and multiple arrests as task force activity rises

Sheriff Steve Dawson updated the Hardy County Commission May 6 on a spike in drug-enforcement activity and the local task force’s recent arrests and seizures.
Dawson said the task force executed traffic stops that recovered about 206 fentanyl capsules and seized roughly 3.5 ounces of suspected fentanyl in one recent operation. The task force made multiple arrests for possession with intent to deliver and conspiracy, and the sheriff noted federal prosecutions with multi-year sentences for local defendants in recent weeks.
The sheriff credited the multiagency task force — including local deputies and partners in state and federal task forces — with “fantastic work” that has led to numerous arrests and large seizures. Dawson also described the broad scope of law enforcement work in the county: civil processes, extraditions, juvenile transports and drug transports that add to deputies’ workload beyond 911 call responses.
Dawson told commissioners the department remains under budget for the year to date and thanked commissioners for support. Commissioners asked about community safety in smaller towns and discussed preventive steps such as improved lighting and camera coverage in public places.
What’s next: the task force will continue multijurisdictional operations and the sheriff’s office will coordinate with the commission on community-safety measures such as cameras in smaller towns.
