Hardy County approves $5,000 for high school DECA students' trip to Orlando

The Hardy County Commission voted to provide $5,000 to support a local high school DECA chapter’s trip to the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida.
The student presenter said the chapter will send 13 students to the conference April 25–30 and that the total cost is roughly $29,000, with about $24,000 raised so far. “We are asking for $5,000 to aid in expenses,” the student said during a presentation to the commission.
The presenter described the chapter’s recent fundraising: a merchandise enterprise at a regional tournament, a barbecue that raised $675, a yard sale and other events. The student said first- and second-place finishers at a regional competition will advance to the international conference.
Commissioners asked about how the funding would be used and whether it could be earmarked for particular schools if checks arrive designated by town. The presenter replied that donations are intended for music, band and chorus departments in the schools and that the checks are written to the boards of education with a memo indicating intended use.
After a motion to fund the request, commissioners voted in favor. The presenter was thanked by the chair and by other commissioners for the chapter’s fundraising and year-long activities.
Commission action: $5,000 awarded to the DECA chapter to support travel and related expenses; motion carried.
