Commissioners approve $126,908 purchase of custom furnishings for restored Polk County courthouse

Polk County Commissioners Court voted May 13 to purchase custom-built furnishings for offices relocating to the restored historic courthouse.

The FY2025 budget includes $100,000 for furnishings; the vendor proposal for custom pieces totals $126,908, leaving an unfunded portion of $26,908. The furniture will be built by the TDCJ Ramsey Furniture Factory in accordance with plans approved by the Texas Historical Commission and the county’s local historical commission.

A county staff member explained that historically significant pieces currently in county offices would be restored or refurbished to meet Texas Historical Commission standards. The staff recommendation said the custom furniture is a one‑time purchase intended to match the restored courthouse’s historic character and reduce recurring replacement needs.

A resident speaker raised concerns in public comment earlier about use of other general fund accounts for courthouse expenses; that speaker asked that courthouse renovation spending be transparent and budgeted from the historic courthouse renovation grant where appropriate. At the dais, a commissioner voiced hesitation before the final vote but the motion carried; the transcript records one commissioner stating, “I’m not ready to commit for that again,” then the court recorded one opposed and the motion carried.

County staff said the unfunded portion would be covered by this year’s contingency line item if the court approved the purchase. The court authorized the purchase and instructed staff to proceed with procurement and payment arrangements under the budget amendment procedures included in the meeting packet.
