The items are to be built by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Ramsey Furniture Factory to specifications tied to the county’s Texas Historical Commission grant and the approved restoration plans. "With this furniture, you buy it once and you're done," said Jessica, a county staff member, describing the project's one-time cost and the furniture’s expected longevity.
Staff explained that historically significant pieces selected by offices (for example, shelving in the county clerk and tax office) will be refurbished to Texas Historical Commission standards, while other offices will receive the new custom-built items specified in the restoration plan.
Commissioner Purvis moved to approve the capital purchase from the Commissioner's Court capital outlay (office buildings and equipment) budget, with the county covering the unfunded portion from contingency; Commissioner Robertson seconded. The motion carried with one commissioner recorded as opposed in the transcript.
County staff said if the court declined to fund the $26,908 unfunded portion, they would adjust specifications and reduce the scope of the purchase. The court directed staff to proceed with the purchase under the terms approved.
