Committee members discussed concerns that the county election commission may exceed its current budget and agreed to pursue a meeting with state officials to review operations and fiscal management.
"At this rate, we're going to be at the end of the year probably exceeding the budget," staff said of the election office estimates.
Members recalled prior discussions in the audit committee and recommended inviting representatives from the secretary of state's office and the state comptroller for a joint session with the budget committee. Staff and the law department were asked to coordinate scheduling and to try to arrange the meeting before the June budget hearings so that any recommendations from state officials can be considered in the budget process.
No formal appropriations were changed at the meeting; commissioners instructed staff to pursue availability from the state offices and to structure the meeting so fiscal questions and operational procedures can be examined together.
