Commission approves small additional payment for historic Brown House inspection

Sumner County commissioners approved an additional $2,500 to support further inspection and assessment of the Brown House historic property after fieldwork revealed more original log fabric and structural elements than staff had expected.
A county-hired preservation specialist spent an initial day inspecting the house and found hand-hewn log beams and older floor material in portions of the building. Staff said the consultant needs more time to remove limited sections of brick veneer and to crawl under the rear portion of the building to assess framing and foundations so the commission can evaluate restoration options and obtain accurate contractor bids.
Commissioners and staff stressed the additional payment is intended to produce options — what to preserve and what to replace — so the commission can make an informed decision about long-term work. Staff said the consultant does not expect to spend the full $2,500 and that the money will be drawn only as needed for inspection tasks and proposal preparation.
The vote to increase the inspection allocation carried unanimously.
