NAACP-ACTSO winners: 36 Hillsborough students earn national medals, 23 gold

Lynette Judge and Yvette Lewis of the Hillsborough County NAACP presented awards May 13 for the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) and named local medal winners advancing to the national competition.
Judge said Hillsborough students competed in 20 national categories this year and reported the district produced 36 national medalists: 23 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze. Winners included students from Middleton, Armwood, Blake, Brandon, Gaither, Sumner, Sbuto and Tampa Bay Technical high schools; presenters highlighted several individual gold medalists in fields ranging from entrepreneurship and culinary arts to music and engineering.
Judge thanked local chairs, field chairs and community partners, and noted that national medalists receive cash awards and scholarship opportunities while gaining exposure to professionals in their fields. The recognition was ceremonial; the board did not take action.
