The Iowa City Historic Preservation Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness to enclose a rear covered porch at 834 North Johnson Street — the Prospect Hill / Downing-Pickering Glasgow House — converting it into interior space for a bathroom, laundry and mudroom.
Rachel Schafer, an associate planner, told the commission that the property is a key contributing resource in the Brown Street Historic District and that the proposed enclosure will use wood lap siding and trim painted to match existing materials. Door product information submitted by the applicant was reviewed and found to meet the board’s door guidelines.
Staff said the project would remove an existing concrete slab, pour a concealed new foundation, add a back door trimmed to match an existing door to the east, and retain the porch trim where feasible. The design aims to preserve visible historic character and allow the porch area to be returned, in principle, if such reversal were desired in the future.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the building’s history and porch configuration; staff noted that the main front of the house historically faced Brown Street but that changes over time mean the porch enclosure will not be prominent from the street. Commissioner Wolew Reynolds moved to approve staff’s recommendation; the motion passed.
Staff will monitor the submitted materials and the work during permit review to confirm compliance with the commission’s conditions.
