The City Council approved a project manual and authorized staff to solicit bids May 6 for the Rundell Street pump station vault modification project, work intended to improve reliability, ADA accessibility and site safety at a neighborhood pump station in the Longfellow area.
Engineering staff described the vault as a 1984‑era pump station that runs in all rain events to keep the Rundell/Center Street intersection out of standing water. The project will rebuild the vault top to accommodate ADA curb ramps, replace two smaller submersible pumps and the larger pumps that can handle up to roughly 10,000 gallons per minute, update electrical controls and add limited floodproofing. Work includes reconstructing curb ramps at the intersection; city staff said temporary pedestrian detours will be used during construction.
City engineering estimates construction bids will total about $400,000. Staff said the work will be bid this month with the goal of completing construction during the 2025 season and finishing remaining cleanup the following spring. The council approved the resolution to advertise for bids after a brief public hearing in which no members of the public spoke.
Engineering staff said more comprehensive, passive stormwater solutions would require much larger infrastructure investments, not part of this modest pump-station upgrade. The council approved the project by unanimous vote and directed the clerk to post the bid notice and receive bids.
