Council approves capital equipment for electric and water departments

The Nixa City Council approved three capital equipment purchases during the May 13 meeting, voting to authorize purchases that staff said were included in the city's 2025 CIP budget.
Electric Superintendent Bridal Denny presented Resolution 2025‑26 to purchase a backyard bucket machine with a material handler for use by the electric department. Denny said the material handler “will fit through a standard walk through gate so we don't have to take down fences” and that the feature will improve safety and reduce the need to remove fences when replacing transformers. Council approved the resolution by voice vote; a councilmember confirmed the purchase falls within the approved budget.
Council then approved Resolution 2025‑27 to purchase a full bucket truck to replace a 10‑year‑old unit. Denny said the truck is budgeted and that policy calls for replacing bucket trucks every 10 years after increasing repair costs.
Assistant Public Works Director Travis Kasi presented Resolution 2025‑28 to buy an excavator for the water department. Kasi said the city budgeted $160,000 in the CIP for the excavator and that using Sourcewell cooperative purchasing allowed staff to acquire the machine for $135,000, “so we're well within the budget.” He said the excavator will reach trenches up to about 15 feet and reduce rental costs for deep excavations.
Staff recommended all three purchases and said Sourcewell cooperative contracts will be used. Council approved each resolution by voice vote; no public speakers addressed the purchase items.
