Council provisionally hires Manisha Hopkins as police dispatcher

The City Council approved a motion to provisionally hire Manisha Hopkins for the position of police dispatcher.
The motion to approve the provisional hire was made by Council member Meyer and seconded by Council member McKinney; the council approved the hire on roll call.
The police chief addressed the council and described Hopkins during the discussion. "Miss Manisha ... she's gonna take a position as a dispatcher for the police department. She is a school teacher by trade," the chief said, adding that one of the department's dispatchers had been called to California to work with Homeland Security/FEMA and will be gone for months.
The chief said Hopkins is in training and will help fill the staffing gap while the department continues to recruit and train personnel. The council did not take any additional personnel action at the meeting.
